Phoning it in

Tuesday night I have a long conversation with my Mom. It begins with her hospital bills* and ends with us both looking at Chihuahuas on Petfinder.com. I have the sneaking suspicion she is, or has been, doing a little drinking.

My relationship with my mother is best explored over the phone. Sometimes I think it forces her to actually listen to me. In person, she gets distracted and will even turn to someone else, while I am in mid-sentence, and ask them a question, completely disregarding the fact that I am talking to her. But on the phone she is my captive. Though she will interrupt me to talk to the dog, or yell at the TV.

My mother grew up in South Dakota, and we talk about her upcoming trip back to the homeland with two of her sisters. There is little family left in Rapid City, save a couple aunts in nursing homes. I only went to South Dakota once that I can recall, when I was 7, to visit my Grandmother. We drove from my Mom’s twin sister’s house in Illinois through the Black Hills, to the edge of the Badlands landing on her Post-War doorstep. I remember little of that trip. I remember being so bored that I cried, so my mom bought us a Slip n’ Slide. I also remember the bruises it left on my hipbones.

Apparently, this was not my only trip to South Dakota. My mother says I have been there no less than 4 times. On the previous occasion (I had been 4) my sister and I got so muddy on a rock hunting expedition** that we had to be hosed down in the front yard. According to her, it was hilarious, which surprises me. I never thought of my mother as one to giggle at dirtiness. I ask her if she has pictures, and she says I think so. I hope that’s true.

I ask her something I have been meaning to ask, but keep forgetting. There is a vague memory of her telling me that someone famous held me as a baby on an airplane. She says 'not quite', and recounts the story of a young mother traveling alone, landing at LAX with a 2 year old and an infant. As the passengers all gather their belongings, my mother fumbles for her baby bags, infant carrier , and purse, all the while keeping a hand free to hold on to my sister. She was a bungled mess of straps and baggage. After realizing none of the flight attendants where coming to her aid, a fellow passenger offers to take the diaper bag and purse and helps her off the plane. My mother looks up in appreciation and realizes that it's Janet Leigh . She doesn't say anything to her, like "wow, you’re Janet Leigh", just accepts her help appreciatively. I imagine Janet, with a 16 year old daughter at the time, feeling compassion for the overwhelmed mother. And I think of my mom, only a couple years older than I am now, traveling alone with a baby and a toddler.

That idea of her is so far off from my perception of her now. I don't think I have fully comprehended her life and all its events and experiences. My idea of her contains only what I can recall, the great majority of that being from her early 40s until now. After she had stopped teaching, had 2 children, and settled into a suburban existence of bridge clubs and soccer. I never knew the version of her that lived in France, or brought home a fistfull of baby rattlesnakes when she was 8. But I hope, with some effort, I can begin to know those parts of her now.

This will be done over the phone.

*If my mother didn’t have health insurance, that little blood clot in her brain would have cost her $17,000.

**Rock hunting is when you go into the wilderness of the Badlands and hunt for rocks. In particular, agates. You spray rocks with a squirt bottle to get the dirt off and see if there are swirlys. I never found anything with a swirly.

So I didn't get stroked, maybe just patted a little.

Well that was interesting. Not alot of action to be had at Nacho Delurking Day. I would like to thank all of you who left a little nugget in the comments section. It is you who gives me the strength to carry on.

Of the 10 comments, 3 were from some regulars (Yay for Amy, Mrs. T and Bret!), 3 were actual lurkers (2 of which I know, Hi Matt and J!) So h0kie erin gets the big delurking award! Which is, um, getting a shout out here! Thanks Erin! The rest were from me, which yes, I am counting.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t think it would go better, but that’s the breaks. The exercise in self-importance that is this blog, cuts both ways.

Next year I will try again, and hopefully it will yield more results. Don’t know if Noah’s Wish will be my charity of choice then, but this year they get a whopping $10 courtesy of you guys! Probably enough to pay for, oh, I don’t know, .75 bags of dog food?

Thanks again my people (oh, you didn’t know? Now, you’re mine. I OWN you).

Onward.

Update: There was one more comment! Girlbomb left one in my Monday post, and I'm no stickler...so now it's $11! Oh, and this gives me a good excuse to link to her HILARIOUS post. If you have been following the James Frey/Smoking Gun stuff at all...she is also a memoir writer. So funny!

Delurk for the Doggies

Editing Note: I orignally started this post on Monday, so I would have it ready to go Wednesday, but even though I didn't publish it until today, it shows as Monday. Not trying to confuse anyone...if you are reading this on Wednesday, please comment. What a freakin' mess. Yay!

Today's the day!

Delurking Day...come on, give it to me.

Well, the least I could is give you something to comment on, huh? Sooooo...

Marcus Vick - does he get drafted into the NFL? If so, what round/team?

If you don't have an opinion, or otherwise don't give a shit, please share a good book...I'm looking for a new one since I just finished A Sunburned Country

Thanks for participating!

Delurking buttons courtesy of Paper Napkin - Creator of Delurking Day.

Nacho Delurking Day - Wed 1/11/06

I mentioned this before, so now is the official announcement.

Wednesday. Wednesday! WEDNESDAY!

I am having a De Lurking Day, Wednesday January 11th.

That means if you come here as a looky-loo, please just say 'hey' in the comments (on wednesday). For every commenter I will donate $1 to Noah's Wish. I will post the entry to comment on the morning of January 11th...you can comment here if you want, but do it again on Wednesday's post to get it to count. My previous post regarding this generated some comments, though I don't think everyone got the concept. Wednesday.

This may end up being a disappointing experiment, I have a sitemeter and it's not too exciting, but who cares. Noahs Wish need that $3!

See you Wednesday!!!

T the Tub of Dog

My dog is not an athlete. I have been watching some crazy dog competition on TV and it has left me significantly disappointed in T. He is no superdog. I tried to call him down from his snooze/drool fest on our bed with "T! Look at the doggies!" but he has no interest. Perhaps he is taking offense. I'm excitedly watching dogs hurl themselves 27 feet over a pool of water, and T can't even swim*. It would be like J watching the Victoria Secret fashion show and yell up "Nacho! Come see these hot girls! Man, they're so hot!"

I must admit that this is not even close to being all T's fault. We have failed him as parents. He has never been to any formal training. His excerise level has MUCH to be desired, especially now that it's 2 degrees outside. He laziness and growing grumpiness must be attributed to us, and us alone.

T does have a few talents. I will share:

Opening screen doors (J taught him that one, brillant!)

He howls when you howl. And I mean HOWL. Very entetaining - to me.

He does this cute sit-up thing when you hold a treat in front of him. J doesn't like me to do it. Says it's humiliating.

He can pop some bubble wrap like a mofo.

His paws smell like Fritos. Ok, not a talent, but my feet don't smell like Fritos.

Dripping nose juice on the couch.

Smearing nose juice on anything that nose juice may cause harm to (leather, for instance).

Barking at the mailman. Cliche, I know, but true.

    Is eating a talent?

    Um, sleeping?

Ok, towards the end they became less like talents and more like annoying habits. But we love 'im..tubbiness and all.

J - I know you have something to add to this list. I know you come here. Show yourself.

T is sleeping so I took is pic. If you look close, you can see the nose juice dripping. Can't see it? Click on the pic and get a close up of the juiciness!

He woke up after I took his picture.

*T is a Labradore, which makes it all that much worse that the boy can't swim. I still blame this on the fact that when he was 8 months old, J threw him in the lake. Scarred for life.

Marcus isn't the only one to go

I mentioned that I would be revamping my Hokie Blogroll, but as per usual, I was feeling too lazy to make my brain think in HTML or CSS or as I call it "random placement of letters and numbers." I am new to this stuff, and it is so not intuitive for me. However, I did manage to get a little done. If any people on my blogroll don't like their little description, I will reliquish the writing to you, and will change it to whatever you would like, within reason of course.

You may notice it's gotten a little trimmer over there. Yep, some people got the axe. Such "permanent dismissal" requires a statement from the administration, so here it goes:

Brooklyn Hokie - Hasn't shown up since the Miami game. Too bad because I like any blog with "Hokie" in the title.

Fenway Lane - I had high hopes for this blog, as I am a Hokie/Redsox fan as well. But no post since the ACC loss? And one post at that. But I will say that if he/she gets up and running, I will gladly put them back on.

Desi - The picture of Michael Vick on the sidebar had me gladly add this blog when I found it, but hasn't said boo about the Hokies or VT once.

The following blogs are on probation. Like Beamer, I believe in second chances, but don't perform and you're history!
(I'm not linking because they're right over there on the side...don't be so lazy people.)

Gorilla - Was going to get the boot, but just posted, so I'll keep you on for a while. Just keep 'em coming.

Ekletos - Lots of Hokie stuff here, but rarely an update. I hate to click in vain.

VA Tech Thought and Ponderings - First, posts not so often. Secondly, he doesn't have comments working. So if your not going to provide the content, the least you can do is let your visitors make it interesting.

And I would like to give a big shout out to Andrew at Turkey Talk. I thought he was gone forever after the ACC loss, but the same day I asked where he went, POOF! he appears. So he remains at the top of my list, since he is my source for Hokie info. Keep on bloggin' Turkey Talk!

Now, on the CSS/HTML note : you may notice when you click on "Hokie Bloggers Unite" it takes you to the above link of "my liberal pie hole" not to mention underline EVERYTHING. I have tried and can't get this to stop. Please help. Any ideas of what is going on?!!

Thanks. Oh, and I'm adding someone new. Hanni, though not really into Hokie football, is a Hokie nonetheless, and one funny bitch. So I'm going to add her too. I noticed after she dropped by, she clicked along the blog roll and visted some of the peeps over there. So she's cool in my book.

Later.

UPDATE:I figured it out...problem solved! it was and unclosed 'a' tag.

wow.

he's gone. I feel bad for his mom. Yikes, PTI guys are harsh. I need a glass of wine.

Move on down

I know you are amazed at my debate skills. Whenever the term 'fucktard' is employed, you can be sure the arguments made are rational and cogent. I am not going back on my point there, not at all, it's just the snarkiness is not me. It was me, just then, just then when I was pissed, but now, eh. So here's a post so my rant will scroll and it's not the first impression you get here at Nacho. But of course, now that I say that, anyone who falls upon this blog will surely go down to see what I am talking about. Hmmph.

I am home now. It's Friday, yay! I usually blog from work, but I figured I'd have a Guiness and do a little here. I am planning to do a little more work on the Hokie Blogroll. Many of those links do not really go anywhere, like I said, one post ponys (ponies?). So if I have linked to you, and you want to stay let me know. Hokie Explorer, Bret, Dan, Tom have nothing to worry about...hi boys. And Turkey Talk, where did you go?! Was the ACC loss really that bad? The rest are to go under scrutiny. Look out!

Speaking of Hokies, I was going to say something about this Marcus thing, but I need to roll it over a little more. Needless to say, I am disappointed, and little embarassed. It's hard to defend a program to its retractors and then have someone undo it, making you look like a moron. Don't get me wrong, I am standing by my Hokies, but Beamer has some work to do. Um, we'll see. It's still too raw to talk about. I think he may be gone, and I am feeling that that is not a bad thing.

Hey, now that I've breached the subject, does anyone know what will happen if Marcus does get booted? Can he play somewhere else? After the Johnny Damon betrayal, wouldn't it just be perfect for him to go to UVA or FSU. God, I would laugh. He probably belongs at Maryland, now that I think about it. Turtle Waxers are fucktards.

Ok, rambling and the snarkiness is coming back. Just passing time. Everyone have a great weekend!

I'm breaking one of my rules

It doesn’t feel like Friday. I actually forgot it was Friday until I pulled into the parking lot this morning. I suppose that’s because it’s only been a three-day workweek for me. Usually, the way a weeks duration feels vs. it’s actually length is inversely proportional. I know I’m not the first to make this astute observation, but (add best Seinfeldian stand up comic tone) why is it that short weeks seem so long?! What’s the deal with that?

Don’t answer that. It’s not an interesting question.

But do you know what is an interesting question? How long will Christians allow this fucktard to portray himself as their leader?(No, I am not above name calling) Come on people, speak up. You don’t agree with him. Don’t let his abnormally large head and strangely Bush-like smirk scare you into thinking that he may be right. Use your brain. Or at least your faith. Faith, not fear, ok? Seriously, how much does God roll his eyes at this idiot?

Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissension and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. (NAS, Romans 16:17-18)

I sorta decided not to get political/religious here. I decided it wouldn't be my forum for that kind of expression. But it was the straw people. In a heap of many. The last little one on a gigantic pile my poor camel has had to carry. And now he's on his knees, all broken up, and it makes me mad. So there.

Vent over.

Now for a new pile...but, first I need another camel. Maybe Penelope will let me have hers.

The Hunt

To understand what Portland Madness was, check out my original post of Wacky out West...I'm not going to link to it because I'm lazy, ok.

So this shindig Matt put together with some friends was awesome. 25 or so people running around the city creating curious looks and mayhem at every turn. It started by teams registering and paying their $20 to participate. The $20 went to the after-party and grand prize...which I think was $200. Each team was armed with a list of tasks to complete and photograph, a team mascot, and for some of the more adventurous, team uniforms. We were pirates...Aaarrrgh!

And the winners for the funniest costume was............

The unicorns! (I told you there were unicorns) The number on the dry erase board conincides with the task number on your hit list. This one is #12, one pic of three showing the team using each mode of public transportation available in Portland.

Since our host Matt was the orginizer, our team didn’t participate in the competition portion, but always willing to make fools of ourselves in strange cities, prize shmize.

I could go on and on about the night, but like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Shiver me timbers! Our team doing #4 - team human pyramid at a bus stop.

Ei Matey..we needs some provisions to keep off the scurvy!
#20 Team at the Co-op grocers "thoroughly examining the produce"

Every pirate really wants to be a rock star.
#25 -Team rockin' out to the Areosmith sign at the Civic Center.

Rain Ahoy! Sheild us from the weather or you'll walk the plank!
#2- Team picture with the "umbrella man"

And god, there is so much more, and it's HILARIOUS. The other teams basically kicked our asses and got a ton of stuff done. Tasks included break dancing at union station, kung fu fighting at the ice rink, and shopping at the dildo store (one team even got a picture of boobies! though it wasn't on the list...hmmm.) I however have limited patience with uploading photos so, in a salute to them, here is a Starbucks pic from them all...25 points for each picture in front of a different one. Needless to say, the city's full of them.

Thanks Matt, Jodi and friends. It was a blast. Next year, we'll kick your ass.

Back from the great Pacific Northwest

So much to talk about, but my lack of sleep and jet lag precludes the spinning of witty tales of waterfalls and unicorns. Doesn't it sound magical? And I'm not kidding, there were both waterfalls and unicorns. I will be able to share events in an entertaining manner once my brain reboots with a good night sleep.

In the meantime, I want to share with everyone one thought on Portland. Although I really did like it there (on many levels), I could not live there. My hair is not cool enough. And with continuous rain and mist my long waged war against the natural fuzz state of my hair would surely fail. Needless to say, the whole bangs situation would have to be rethought. And without bangs, I would definitely dip a few notches on the hip meter, which in Portland goes pretty high.

I heard a wise man say some dudes were getting "all Brit-Pop on my ass." Which puts it perfectly. Not only do I lack the style or hair type to sufficiently feel at ease, the fact all the boys are way skinnier than me and have cooler jeans is just depressing.

Perhaps if they were getting all "70’s funk" on my ass, I’d do better.

Stroke Me

Leaving on a jet plane tomorrow for Portland. Doubt I will post from there, but you never know!

Courtesy of Paper Napkin, I am planting the seed for National De-Lurking week, January 9-13. At this time last year, I was a blog lurker, not a blog writer, and I enjoyed coming out from the shadows without the pressure of being pithy, just simply saying 'yep, I’m here.' Since this blog is an exercise in self- importance, please participate if you ever come here to read what I have to say. It will make me happy. And, as added incentive, I will give $1 toNoah’s Wish for every comment(er) I receive.

Perhaps I should narrow that down to a day, because that could add up. Not because there are legions of you out there (though I do fantasize that there are dinner conversations that start "And did you read what Nacho said today…oh, that girl is the bees knees!" Ok, not the bees knees part, but you get my meaning). It's just that I have not so much money after Christmas. Maybe I'll just put a cap on it. Wow, am I really trying to figure out how to be stingy with my charitable giving? Hey, we can't all be Oprah.

I’ll put up a reminder when the time gets closer and some additional information regarding my acceptable generosity to poorness ratio.

Happy New Year, my loyal legions of lurkers.

Saving my calories for eggnog.

I am trying my best to stay away from the pyramid of yummy baked-goods in the company kitchen. I swear there is a conspiracy to make me fat. I have a nice healthy stash of apples in the fridge, but how can you grab one of those when there's a shmorgesborg of chocolate and transfats just sitting there on the table. Usually it's nice when people bring in homemade goodies, but this time of year it’s really just too much. There are only 5 of us in the office today, and probably at least 50 cookie/bar/pastry type things. How do these people have time to bake...I’m talking mini bannana bread loaves. Honestly, especially with all the shopping and stressing to be done? And of course there is the incredibly long winded blog posts to be written about traitorous professional athletes and problems with boys. I’m keeping this one short, just wanted to touch base before jumping into the festivities...see you on the other side.

So Happy Christmas, Holidays, Winter Solstice College Bowl Season!*

Boys and Christmas

Because once I start bitching, it's hard to stop. At least this will change the subject.

I know this isn’t any great revelation. Women have been saying it for ages. Men are impossible to buy presents for. There is a myriad of reasons this is true. The one that causes the most grief in my own life is the good ol'

IF HE WANTS IT, HE BUYS IT

Guys know what they like, and if they like it enough, they just go ahead and get it. There is little financial concern or monetary debate. Within reason, if they want it enough, they find the money. In the event it costs so much that they can't justify buying it for themselves, then it’s certainly too pricey for me to buy it. Because that means it's really expensive.

The only thing that I could come up with that J wanted for Christmas, that he hasn't already purchased for himself, is a flat screen TV. Yeah, right! Unfortunately for him, that's not happening. They cost $3,000. And even if they were significantly cheaper, I couldn't get him one, because we'd already have one.

Perhaps this is a secret ploy for men to get women to buy them REALLY expensive gifts. If they buy all the reasonably priced things themselves, then what's left? I'll tell you what’s left...a book. Here's a book. Enjoy

My Dad seems to get alot of books, but not solely because of the above reason. The short of it is that he is very particular. He has strong preferences when it comes to the fit of things. The sleeves are too long, the shoulders are too tight, the porridge is too cold.…It can be very rewarding when you succeed in finding something that fits just right. It's like russian roulette with sweaters! There is nothing wrong with this of course. We all like things the way we like them. It's just that it makes buying him any sort of apparel daunting, to say the least. Hence, when you couple the HE WANTS IT, HE BUYS IT with the CHANCES ARE IT WON’T FIT RIGHT, you get books.

There was some talk in my house about what to get each other for Christmas. J usually has a few ideas of what he would like. The problem is that they are so many options and digits and dashes involved in whatever it is, it would actually be easier to just give him cash. This leads us to reason #3 it is impossible to buy presents for boys

HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT HE WANTS

Oh, they know what they want alright. Down to the littlest specification. They may say, 'Boy I like those new Motorola cellphones.' But, oops! They meant the one with the built in GPS tracker not the video camera! That’s the Q47 –06 not the Q47-09. Geez, how did I mess that up! And you are destined to have a disappointed boy on Christmas, or at least someone who now has to go the mall (yikes!) and do an exchange.

There is something distinctly uncomfortable and cold to me, in having someone write down the manufacturer and model number for everything they want for Christmas. Where's the surprise? Where's the "Wow, how did you know!? Thanks!" Perhaps this is less of a 'Why boys are impossible to buy for' and more of a 'Why K never gets me anything I want' problem. J would be guaranteed all that he desires if I would let him write it all down. Then I could just go and buy and check it off the list. Ugh, what a horrible idea. No fun at all. And I know success is possible. I hitch all my hopes on the memory of presenting J with a microphone...that would be a Shure Beta 57-A microphone.

Some how, through all this complaining and worrying, I manage to get the boys in my life presents. Not always great ones, but good enough I think. Though Dad usually gets a book, I try to find one that I know he will enjoy. And the surveillance system I have set up to spy on J in the hopes of discovering what he may like, usually pays off. This year, not so sure, but we'll see.

2nd Stage of Grief: ANGER

Not to beat a dead horse, but this Johnny Damon thing is upsetting. The more I read out there in the blogosphere, the more pissed I get. Here are a few pearls from the sox fans out there:

Johnny Damon could have remained a Red Sox for life, played two years longer than he should have, and never bought a meal in New England again. Instead, he’s a Yankee. I'll be back in a while; I need to find some flame accelerator. -www.scsuscholars.com

See you in the Bronx, Mr. Damon. I hope you enjoyed your last standing ovation at Fenway Park, as you will never hear the Boston Crowd cheer your name again. -www.thediatribe.net

Not much of me even cared to think about the business point of view. All I was thinking was that Johnny Damon had a choice to sign with any team, and he chose the one that I hate more than almost anything in the world. One that won't allow him to do what he wants (hair/beard-wise). One that he knows is hated by the people who really, really loved him as a player and as a person. -www.letsgosox.blogspot.com

Johnny Damon will never be the marketing chip in New York he had been in Boston--precious few Yankees fans will be running around sporting pink #18 tees anytime soon. As such, Johnny Damon probably just cost himself $3 million in marketing royalties just by being a shallow, materialistic dickhead. -www.confessionalpoet.typepad.com/cursed_to_first/

And from the best source I know...My Darling Husband.

FUCK...I hate having to hope Johnny Fucking Damon tears his ACL slipping on some ice after martinis at Nobu with A-Rod

2 scenarios are acceptable if there is in fact a baseball god. I mentioned the first in the headline of the post. Like I said I hate having to hope for this but i have to be honest and say that I would be a happy boy if it were to play out like that. Sorry K, I know you hate this mentality but it's how I'm wired. Can't be helped. Even if he can't play baseball anymore he can still do starbucks commercials (not too many dunkin donuts in the city). He could *chuckle* become a sportscaster. Right. We all know talking has never been JD's strength. This leads me to the second acceptable scenario. It's simple. It would basically just call for him to suck ass and bat like .145, get hooked on crystal meth and get thrown in Rikers for blowing businessmen for crack money once the starbucks money runs out. I fear however that we will be subjected to a much more torturous future. he will continue to be the nastiest lead off hitter in baseball causing me to utter the words "johnny fucking damon" countless times in 06. Even though I hate him today he was fun to have on the sox the past few years. Part of me doesn't really blame him 100% (only 99). Can't help but wonder if this would have happened with theo at the helm. It broke down to freakin $3m a year. They could have afforded him without blinking an eye. They just blew it. Jed and Chet or whatever the fuck their names are have gotten off to a bad start. A BIG hit in the PR dept. Maybe they can land OCab @ short and get a little personality back in the dugout. Here's to hoping.

There is so much great writing out there, I can't share it all. Sorry I didn't link, but my html tolerance is not up to par today, so just copy and paste to check out the full posts. Most of these people also have sox blog rolls, so if you are looking to get fired, you can spend your entire work day reading the reactions to this betrayal.

I honestly think, and hope, he will regret this move.

$52M and a Hair Cut

Five years ago, I moved to New England having never watched a baseball game. Not even The World Series. At the time, I equated watching baseball with the other time-honored tradition of watching paint dry.

Then I found the Red Sox. The mythical story surrounding the team, tales of curses and unbelievable bad luck endeared them to me. Add in the infectious enthusiasm of the fans, and a beautiful home in the middle of a great city and I was hooked. I am an emotional fan. The level of awe and feeling surrounding Red Sox Nation was enough to pull me in. Call me what you will, but I jumped on that bandwagon full tilt and my heartbreak after the 2003 season was just as real as anyone’s.

My mom was surprised to hear I had become a fan of baseball. I explained to her how the transformation occurred. How once you get to know the team – the players – the game opens up to you. You see a familiar face at the plate, and you know what they are capable of, and you tense up with excitement. How the Sox taught me more about baseball than I knew existed. I can’t tell you how privileged I feel to have been a fan when they finally did it in 2004. It was a truly magical, and sleep deprived week when they came back against the Yankees. Those guys were my team, and I loved them

Well, when I started this emotional investment, there was a lot about baseball I still didn’t know. Things you learn from being a fan for many years, and many seasons. Things about money and loyalty. I soon realized that often my loyalty was not to be reciprocated. That they didn’t love me they way I loved them. They were just doing a job. Money was to be made, endorsement deals pursued. I understand its what these guys do for a living, but where is the sense of home, of commitment? Don’t they get attached to us the way we do to them?

Perhaps it’s because they are often used like the currency they chase after. They are easily handed over for something the bearer needs more. Traded and swaped with a "what have you done for me lately" vibe. It's no wonder they are constantly shopping around for a sweeter deal, hoping to cash in before they pop their ACL.

Many of you longtime baseball fans see it as part of the game, and something that has always been going on and will continue to go on. I am sure you are right. Being relatively new to the sport, I am disappointed. I don't have a history with the Red Sox the team, the brand. I have a history with Millar and Manny. One now gone, the other trying to get away.

But I'm learning. I am becoming numb to the disappointment. The child-like wonder is slowly being replaced by aged cynicism. Perhaps it will make me a better fan. Somehow I doubt it. So,from now on, I will try not to form attachments, they only break your heart. Is it better to have loved and lost, than to never loved at all? I suppose it was nice while it lasted. So goodbye Johnny. . .

It's gonna get wacky out west

I am so excited about New Years Eve, I can barely stand it! J and I are heading out West to Portland, OR. The Lennon to J’s McCartney lives there and they have scheduled a fun event for us to partake in. It sounds like a total blast. Though the "team uniform" aspect has me a little worried. Our host is one of those guys that gets dressed up in polyester three piece suits and afro wigs to go to a bar...just because. This is sure to go down in the record books. I hate to say it, but part of me is happy I haven’t gotten pregnant yet. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures! Weeeeeeeee...fun!

Ladies and Gents....Portland Madness. The alternative to the typical New Years Eve party. Are you in?

The deal: The contest is a scavenger hunt. Teams will score points by completing challenges and tasks throughout the Portland Metro Area. Contest begins with drinks at 6pm, December 31st, at Zaytoon's bar on Alberta Street. There will be team registration, and at 6:30 each team will receive the maps and challenges that make up the Madness. Teams will strategize until 7:30, at which point....
the game begins.

Completion of tasks will be documented by digital camera. The contest ends at 11:00 at the doorway of Jesse and Jennifer's apartment. Photos will be uploaded to a central PC, points will be tabulated, drinks will be served, and after Midnight, the winners will be announced. Cash and other prizes awarded for teams that stand out.
The party ensues with music and dancing, including a slide show of Madness challenge photos.

Sounds like fun? Sure it does - you've never done this before, and what else do you have planned?

SO - To register your team, you need:

1) team uniform and mascot - whatever your mascot, it's got to be in the photos. Something stuffed will work nicely.
2) $20 per head (covers entry fee and drinks at the after-party) will be due at registration. Less is OK if you're not drinking.
3) One digital camera per team

Those without a team, or teams needing members, can register and be matched up with others at registration.

Important ground rules!
1) 3-4 people on a team
2) No driving - all other means of transport permitted
3) Deadline to return is 11:00 PM.
4) Creative suggestions welcome.

More details to follow. The more players the better. We'll cap the game at 40 players, so RSVP soon

If only I could get her a sense of humor for Christmas

Mom: I can’t believe you’ve never seen It’s a Wonderful Life.

Nacho: Just not all the way through. I guess I’m more of a Scrooged or A Christmas Story kinda person.

Mom: A Christmas Story? Do you mean A Christmas Carol?

Nacho: No, A Christmas Story, with Messy Marvin? Don’t tell me you’ve never seen A Christmas Story?

Mom: Oh, that BB gun movie. No, I’ve never seen it.

Nacho: Wow. I think they have a 24 hour marathon of it every year. I can’t believe you’ve never gotten sucked into it at least once.

Mom: I change the channel.

Nacho: Mom, you really ought to give a shot. It’s only the funniest Christmas movie ever made.

Mom: I don’t think guns are funny. Even BB guns. They’re dangerous.

Nacho: Because you could shoot your eye out?

Mom: Exactly.

She's Mighty Fine

It’s a crispy crunchy Friday here in Western Massachusetts, as the couple inches of snow from last night is glazed by freezing rain. Took about 20 minutes for my car to warm up to the point that the encasement of ice could be penetrated by a scraper. What a mess.

I would like to thank all the people who offered suggestions for my Christmas quandary. I’m pretty sure it will be a book, and if he’s lucky (and I’m not too slow of a knitter), a hat.

With all this talk about presents, and shopping, and snow, I wanted to share with you all a magnificent resource. First, read how funny she is! Though I do not share her disdain for snow, I do share her affinity for yummy tropical drinks. Then you must check out her wonderful pages of stuff you never knew you needed, but now must have. So GREAT for gifts! Whether it be a wedding or house warming, Maggie truly has a flair for wading through all the crap and finding nice little nuggets of hip and cute. Since my Dad is neither hip, nor cute, her expertise could not help me with the challenge that is my father.

Enjoy your journey into Poor-er-ness!

Please tell me, what are you getting your Dad? (Seriously– help!)

I’m at a complete loss. I've searched the Internet far and wide, and I have yet to find anything that my Dad would even remotely like. If you go by retailer suggestions, all Dads are boozers who play golf, smoke cigars and prefer that all their possessions are protected by individually hand-sewn leather totes. Besides the wallets and countless laptop bags there are leather ipod covers, leather flask holders, leather keychains, leather tie cases, leather cufflink holders, leather sunglass protectors, leather shaving kits…is there some sort of man=leather fetish rule I am unaware of? All I need to do is come up with a leather all in one flask/golfbag/humidor and I'll be rich…oh,too late. Not exactly a humidor, but you could stash one of these in the cell phone compartment

And who in the world needs all the tie accessories out there? Hangers, holders, organizers, travel cases? First of all, if I was a dude, I would be pissed that I had to wear a tie to begin with. I wouldn’t need the fact that I am forced to conform to an uncomfortable social practice reinforced by the many accoutrements aiming to maximize my tie wearing efficiency. Seriously, who needs one of these (and of course, it’s made of leather). We don’t have panty hose organizers do we? No. Well, at least I don’t think so. Perhaps I am unawares? (Oh, dibs! perhaps I have fallen on my ever elusive million dollar idea. I must call my patent lawyer immediately.)

Please help me. Nacho’s Dad deserves something nice.

Meat and Magic

Well, Christmas has officially arrived. I came home yesterday to a familiar yule-tide sight on my front porch. A red and white box stamped with Perishable Meats, Open and Refrigerate Immediately! Not familiar with this symbol of Christmas cheer? The annual stash of breakfast meat has been a reliable treat at our home, yet it manages to surprise me every year. The generosity comes from one of the vendors J deals with. Nothing says Christmas like a selection of sausage and bacon from the midwest. To my dismay, there is no cheese, as one would expect from a package of edibles from Wisconsin. There is however, some maple syrup and pancake mix. Well, there was pancake mix. I left it on the counter and when we came back from an evening at the movies, there was a big, sloppy white goo-fest on our carpet. T, the dog, found the mix to be very tasty, as I'm sure the pancakes it would have produced would have been. Cleaning it up proved to be a bigger challenge that you would expect. Did you know that when Buttermilk pancake mix combines with doggy spit it becomes a nasty cement-like substance, impossible to remove from carpet fibers? Me neithe. My education continues.

Finally saw Harry Potter last night. It was enjoyable. As with all movies made from books, things seemed a little undeveloped and quick. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, I don’t want to spoil anything...but I'm sure anyone who wants to see the movie has read the book, so you already know. Just want to give you warning, because here are a few observations:

Um, what is up with that dress they put Hermione in? This was supposed to be her Pretty Woman/ Ugly Duckling moment and they throw her in a boob pinching, foo-foo, ruffled satin and chiffon monstrosity. And the hair...she looked like she came out of the North and South mini-series.

There was no appearance of Oliver Wood (boo). Cedric was not cute enough to make up for it. His head was shaped funny.

I still don’t think they play Dumbledore right in the movies. In the books, he comes across light-hearted and sorta goofy. Not so in the film. Way too serious.

Ok, enough of the bitching already...there was some good stuff too.

Special effects and sets worked well. Not too far off from the pictures in my head.

The maze. Cool...I mean, brilliant. (I’m considering adopting this aphorism. Cool has become overused in my personal vocabulary. And everyone knows, Harry Potter books also act as great Thesauruses.)

Ray Feines was bloody brilliant. His performance was spot on, playing that git Voldermort, though he was only in the very last bit. And blimey, those buggery Death Eaters were scary. It got a little dodgey, but luckily Harry got away and saved his arse.

That is all, off to nosh some bacon and snog my husband.

Editing note: After reading my entry, I became alarmed at the superfluous use of exclaimation points...so I removed them. I sounded like a hyper 13 year old.

I'm such an Oprah cliche'...where's my makeover!

It’s Sunday afternoon, J is at band practice and the dog is rumbling away upstairs, enjoying the traction the new carpet affords. As a result of his indulgence, some of the little berber loops have become pulled and yanked, leaving little threads sticking up like worms after a rain. I should stop him, but he’s having way too much fun.

I am still in my pajamas. Yes, it’s 3:30. It is unusually dark outside, even for wintertime. I should have tried to venture out while the sun was shining, but unfortunately looks like I missed my chance.

At the risk of scaring off some of my new found readers, here’s a little self importance and self obsessing I need to get off my chest:

Do you ever see a picture of yourself, and think, Oh my god, do I really look like that? Of course you do, I’m sure everyone has. Well, today, a friend posted a funny doctored picture of me (doctored in that it looks like I’m trying to steal Donald Trump’s wallet! ha! it is funny) on our “friend” blog, and I look HUGE, fat with horrible posture and double chins…and it has me in a funk. I am thinking of doing 20 posts just so that picture will scroll off the page and I won’t have to look at it. I am vain, and notoriously unphotogenic. Or perhaps I really look like that, and I’m just in denial. I hate that I can’t enjoy the funny, simply because I look like shit.

Ok, enough of my therapy for today. Don’t want to be a downer. This week will bring uplifting and interesting communication from Nacho! God, I hope I get my happy lamp for Christmas. The full spectrum goodness will surely do wonders for my self image and I’ve even read it can curb your appetite! Wouldn’t that be a bonus.

Photo Poop

Early tomorrow morning we are supposed to get the first good snow of the season. I didn’t get to witness the 3" we got while I was in Jacksonville, unless you count the time I spent shoving it off my car in the airport parking lot. I guess it's going to be 6" or so. Not a big snow, but enough to snow blow instead of shovel. I am glad, because it's FREEZING here. I'm talking 11 degrees people! In the past I have expressed my not-so-enthusiastic view towards New England winters. However, I am also a firm believer that, as long as it’s going to be cold as balls, the least you can do is give me some pretty.

By the time I got out of work it was getting dark (thank you New England winter). This is the only picture I could get before my fingers fell off and my camera broke. Fabulous. J attemped to give it the Fonzi, but it's still whirring and grinding and beeping at me. So, no pics for a while :-(

The Nacho is out of the Bag

My cover is blown. It is not a result of the picture I posted, as I had feared might happen, but due to a little feature that has foiled many a covert porn connoisseur and in-office job seeker…the dreaded AutoFill. I had told my husband that I had started a blog, but wanted to keep it a private outlet for thoughts and ramblings. He was cool with that and encouraged me to blog away. But since so many witty and funny people visit me, I couldn't NOT share some of the more amusing happenings at Nacho Intolerant. I told him I had put a Hokie blog roll and relayed some of the interesting people and anecdotes to be found in the Hokie Blogosphere. Realizing that I had been running around, trying to find everyone's take on the happenings of last weekend, and not to mention commenting like crazy, I figured he may have found me. He is, after all, a proud Hokie himself and more than familiar with Blogger and Google and is a smarty pants.

I’ve been trying to fix the look of this site for a while. I am not good at HTML or CSS, but after work I went home and tried to fix a few of the quirks I have going on here. I was fiddling away with smoke wafting out my ears when he came home. Instinctually, I went to quickly minimize Safari, so he couldn’t see the Nacho site, but instead I decided to ask.

Nacho: You haven’t discovered my blog, have you?
J: Smirk/Smile
Nacho: When did you find it!
J: About a month ago

Yikes! I quickly run through all the posts in my head, trying to think if I said anything that would cause him to either A: Run screaming to the nearest lawyers office, or B: Recoil in anger regarding all the name calling and husband bashing. But, with my husband being such a wonderful person, I realized that nothing like that could have possibly occurred. He is such a caring and sensitive individual, he gave me no fodder to attack is lovely, sexy and all round amazing person (Hi Honey!). To talk ill of him would be impossible.

I thought he had discovered me as perhaps a commenter on a site I had mentioned that I visit, such as Miles from Fenway (he is a sox fan) or Opinionista (though I doubt he could figure me out since she gets like a million comments a day). But no. He said he even tried to Google me based on what he thought I might be blogging about. Some of his searches were "big brown dog" and "big brown monster" because there are endless things to be said about the dog. But that didn’t work.

Then one day, he went to the computer and starting typing in the address bar. Not sure what he was looking for, but the www.n led right into www.nachointolerant.blogspot.com . And J, knowing my aversion to corn was able to do the math. And there you have it! I am outed. I will try to not let it effect the self indulgent writings you find here.

And now we have to go back

First and foremost, I am a fan. I am far from a student of the game itself. Though some people seem to have a RainMan-esque ability to record stats and details into their brain, I am not one of those people. I do not have a mind for sports in that way. If sports is music, I am tone deaf. I sit and enjoy the sounds, and appreciate the talent with little comprehension of the laws and theories that guide it. I also lack the ability to accurately convey what has just gone in my ear hole with my mouth hole.

Football games tend to wash over me as an experience, not a linear set of occurrences or a string of single events. I am saying this so you understand that in relaying my ACC Championship experience, there will be information lacking, and I dare say remembered completely wrong. My memories are based in emotion, not in details. And without the reinforcement I am used to, the details have mixed together in a random swirl of images and feeling. At home I complain about the inane ramblings of the sportcasters, and roll my eyes at their silly puns; but for someone who does not get to go to actual LIVE games very often, I am amazed to find how dependent on commentary and instant replay I have become. And not just because I forgot my glasses (which I did).

That said...here it is! First for the happy fun time before the sad despondent time.

The day started great. I arrived at the Jacksonville airport on a plane of 140 people, and walked into the Florida sun with a gaggle of Gobblers. My sister picked me up and we went straight to the stadium. After walking through the parking lot, past the tailgaters with their BBQ and beer, we made our way toward the FanFest.

The FanFest provided a lot of distractions of the sporty type – throw a football through a ring, try to kick a field goal, push one of those big metal push things linebackers always push in the movies. My sister made some cash off a slightly drunk, but enthusiastic Hokie, who offered her $5 to kick a football through two bright yellow inflatable uprights.

Spontaneous chants of Go Hokies mixed with the brass and drums of The Marching Virginians. It was a sea of maroon and orange. We probably out numbered the ‘Noles 2 to 1. After taking in as much as we could, we headed inside.

Then the game began.

I must say, the first half was one of the most unremarkable periods of football I can recall. Neither team did much of anything worth noting. There were penalties, LOTS of penalties, and TV timeouts. All combined to bring what should have been an exciting game, to a crawl. I don’t know how long that first half lasted, but it was longer than my bladder could endure.

And it was frustrating, not only because we didn’t seem to be playing up to snuff, but because FSU people surrounded us. Don't get me wrong, our seats were awesome.

It's just that when the mob mentality and contagious excitement is going the other way, it's kind of a downer. Most of the FSU people were perfectly nice, but it only takes a few seconds of that indian tomahawk chop chant to make you want to run away screaming. And they have a song they play repeatedly that ends in spelling, then "Florida State!Florida State!Florida State!" then WHEW! with Jazz Hands. The Inevitable "What the hell’s a Hokie?" question came up. I have always been appalled at the number of my Hokie brethren are who are ill equipped to answer this question. And NO! it is not a castrated turkey! I don’t know where this little fable started, but it was annoying the first time I heard it, not to mention from some drunk FSU frat boy next you acting like he’s the expert.

Anyway, (I’m going to try to keep the 'nole fan bashing to a minimum...but I must add that the arm chop song is WAY more annoying than the USC thing, and used more persistantly, which I didn’t think was possible) the half ended and I sprinted to the bathroom, all the while thinking about the can of Whoop-Ass Beamer must be opening on the boys. I had high hopes for the second half.

Well, the second half started, and at some point the 'noles scored. And then scored again. And then again. See, this is where my memory fails me. I remember the dread, the disappointment. As I said before, the game sits inside me as an experience, not a well ordered sequence of events. I don’t recall downs and yardage, not even the correct timing of the images I have stored in my brain. I remember them returning that kick, ugh. Our complete inability to catch a beautifully thrown pass..um, excuse me, passes. More penalties, though some of them were a saving grace and turned our 4th downs into 1st downs. Wondering why we weren’t running the ball and throwing to the outside so much. And I had lots of questions. I questioned the need for Replay Reviews, since it was obvious the refs are infallible and always make the correct calls. Who is that snapping the ball into Marcus’s ankles? What did that half time pep talk do to Schmidt? And don’t we ever practice 2 point conversions?

Most of all, I remember the hope. The need and want to believe my Hokies wouldn’t disappoint me – that we could pull this out. The optimism and faith began to grow as the clock slowy ticked down. But all hopes where dashed when it was declared our onside kick was recovered one yard too short...it was over.

The points we put on the board did help elevate my spirits from the verge of tears, to glum acceptance. A few of the FSU crowd around us began their gloating. Thinking themselves witty, the "Chokies" comments began. They didn’t understand that the term is well known amongst the VT faithful, and I daresay invoked more by us than any rival.

I will not, however, say the best team won. I believe FSU deserved to win. We did not look like a top 5 team, and I shook my head as the athletes I admire began to lose composure in frustration. The best of the teams that showed up won. The Hokies I know did not show up.

Though the experience was disheartening and sad, it is important to remember, that even amidst our most terrible nightmares, lie glimpses and moments of what we consider dreams.

January 2nd we'll have a chance to show Jacksonville who we really are.
Go Hokies.

Who deserves my blog love?

I've done a little clean up on my Hokies Unite Roll. I created the list after a quick search for Hokies in the Blogosphere. However, many are not in to updating. I have also decided that I will only include those who actually write about the Hokies on occasion. Sorry Kevin Wells! You're out of here! And Southern Comfort, though I'm glad you had a good time with your Grandma, there is football to worry about. Brooklyn Hokie has been spared since his last post was about the Miami game. I can’t really blame him for being too depressed to write. This week is a good litmus - considering the upcoming ACC Championship. If you’re a Hokie blogger, and you don’t say something about this game, then you don’t belong on my blog roll.

I am having some debate about a few other Hokie bloggers I have found. Some of them rub my political sensibilities the wrong way. Though their Hokie pride is intact, their ideas about social/political issues, or manner in which they express themselves, causes me to cringe.

Should the Hokies United be censored? Am I stifling the free exchange of ideas simply because I don’t agree with all those ideas? I guess I’m just afraid that my readers will think I endorse or support the ideas of the people I choose to link to. I suppose I could put little disclaimers after their link that would be sure to let my opionions, of their opinions, be known.

For Instance, New Dominion over there:

New Dominion - Virginia Republican of the Hokie persuasion. At least I like one of his teams.

It's not mean, but lets it be known that although I acknowledge his republicanism, it is not the reason I link to him.

Then there's Grab Tha Junx. I haven't put this guy on yet because he can be pretty offensive. But as it happens, offensive can sometimes be funny...and I've thought of putting him on.

Grab Tha Junx - Hokie whose best idea of an insult is calling someone a Homo. Enjoys questioning the sexuality of any and all Virginia Tech rivals. I do not endorse this method of trash talking. Get this man some sensitivity training.

That is a little more explicit as to "hey, I don't agree with the way this guy decides to express himself"...yeah? I don't know. Maybe I'll put him and take him off if I get complaints. Fuck it, I read his blog. Sometimes it's really funny...though most of the time I roll my eyes. Representing the Hokie Homophobic contingent...every team's got'em I suppose. Obnoxious.

That said, I stand behind my "People I Visit" blogroll 100%! Not to jinx it. Just watch, Sambot will start supporting the practice of forcing cute Robots into death battles and Cattiva will condemn homemade Christmas cards as vailed attempts to cause ridicule and shame.

oh, too late.

PS - Also I declare that Knit Geek needs to post some more pictures of that little cutie and entertain me with stories of silly boys and carpal tunnel.

Turkey Tale #3: Off to stalk the Hokie Bird!

Ok, so this has nothing to do with Thanksgiving...it has to do with the king of all Turkeys, and he ain't for eatin!

I leave early Saturday to go to Jacksonville and cheer on the Hokies to an ACC Championship! My sister is a Hokie in Seminole Country and works in Tallahassee with a bunch of Florida State Alumni. They have an extra ticket, so here I come! We’ll probably be sitting in the FSU section, but that's ok. Can't be as bad as the seats my Dad got for the VT/USC game at Fed Ex field last year. Since he is a USC alum, we sat in the Trojan section….RIGHT behind the band. I mean, DIRECTLY behind the band. USC's little march horn diddy is SOOOO annoying, and repetitive, and annoying. Buuuuuuuum, Bum Bum BaBuuuuuuum, Bum Bum BaBuuuuum. If I recall, FSU has a similar Indian War March kinda tune. Fantastic.

Florida State is up there with UVA and Maryland as a team I just don’t like. I actually dislike them more than UVA. UVA has that little brother sort of feel to me. Sure, let’s kick the shit out of them, but I don’t want everybody in the neighborhood taking shots and bloodying them all up. Unless it helps us of course. But, FSU? Swing away. The Sugar Bowl of '99 left a bad taste in my mouth. Weinke, you Wanker. I cringe when I have to root for them if, by chance, a Seminole victory improves Hokie standings.

This will be also be a perfect opportunity to accomplish one of my lifetime goals. Have my picture taken with The Hokie Bird. I know, not very impressive as far as life aspirations go. But a lot more difficult to achieve than one would think. Mostly due to the fact I am up here in New England, so he doesn't come around very often. Back when I lived in the 'burg, I took his proximity for granted and never pursued photo opportunities with much vigor. Now that I have left my beautiful Blue Ridge and sit here in the dark and cold, the Hokie Bird represents what I have left behind. Friends and mountains and rivers and bars and music and of course all my fellow Hokies.

And by the way, I will be in Florida for 26 whole hours. After all is said and done, I will probably spend more time in airports and planes than swamps or sunshine.

Turkey Tale #2: Tennis Ball Brawl

T is a large dog. He is 90 pounds of big brown butt wiggling, tail wagging happiness. Sure, some may call him "spastic" or "hyper", but it’s all in a general mood of friendship and "OH MY GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE ITS YOU!WOOOHOOO!!!"

Now, D, my parents dog, though also extremely friendly and happy to see everyone, upon sight of the big brown dog, turns into a spitting, growling, "GET OUT OF HERE OR I WILL BITE YOUR FACE OFF!" little white fur ball. D weighs 8 pounds, tops.

They have interacted before, and T has gotten pretty good at ignoring D while she nips at his feet and lunges at his face. I am proud of T's tolerance to the furry little rat, since he is the one who could cause the damage if he really wanted to. One bite, and CRUNCH, D is dinner.

However, this trip the truce was broken. As to who's to blame and what passed between them, I can only guess. Let's just say there was a tennis ball involved. When J yanked T off of D I was sure there was going to be blood on her clean white fur, and gashes in her neck... but to my surprise (and relief) she was fine. T, however, was trailing blood on the floor. Upon closer inspection it looked as though D chomped down on his back foot, leaving a little puncture wound. Yes, the 8 pound dog kicked the 90 pound dogs ass.

Both dogs were promptly exiled to their perspective "Time Out" places. T slumped in his corner, licking his wound, but it wouldn't stop bleeding. It was really barely anything, but since it was a puncture wound, it was deep and not quick to clot. In order to protect my mother's carpet, we wrapped gauze followed by a sock and duct tape. He looked pretty silly...we can't all pull it off like Britney Spears.

Turkey Tale #1: Traffic Terror!

It's a little over an hour into the drive to Virginia, and as we emerge from a tunnel on the Merritt Parkway, red break lights begin to pulse ahead of us.

"Man, that dude just hit the median!" says J, as traffic abruptly slows and begins scooting over to the right. I lean to the left across J's line of sight, and about 50 yards ahead I see a truck with it's left front tire resting half way up the jersey barrier. The car in front of us moves to the right lane, and as he does we see a white van, hazard lights blinking, coming right at us. J quickly moves to the right lane and we watch the van go by, against traffic, in the fast lane.

"You can’t do that!" I say, thinking it's some sort of service van trying to get to...behind us...by driving into oncomming traffic?

"There was no one behing the wheel" says J, stunned.

Huh?

And sure enough, as we pass the wrecked truck crunched against the left median barrier, a few yards up, on the right side shoulder, sits a tow truck. And next to the tow truck stands a dude, with his hands on his head, mouth open - completely mortified. Next to him is a lady on a cell phone, hopefully calling an ambulance. Either for the guy in the truck, or the numerous people that are behind us, not knowing that an ½ ton van is barreling down at them head on. Terrified at the danger of the situation, I turn around to see the van hit the Jersey barrier, and hopefully slow down? When it passed us it was only going about 15mph, but we were on a hill, a STEEP hill, so that van could really have gained some speed. But as we crest the top of the hill, I don't see whether the van has come to a stop.

Holy Moly, I felt lucky. If we left 5 minutes later, who knows? Thank God I wasn't driving. I might have thought the van was trying to win at some game of chicken, and since I was the one driving in the CORRECT direction, I obviously had righteousness on my side. But as everyone knows, you can't play chicken with gravity. Gravity will always win.

Postscript: I checked the Internet afterwards, and there was no report of anyone being hurt, or of the incident itself, so let’s hope everything turned out ok.

And Don't Touch My Stapler!

Just completed the mad dash to get as much stuff done as possible before I take off. Not working is almost as stressful as working! Ok, not really, but the thought of people riffling through my stuff makes me anxious. On the spectrum of organization I am at my most anal the day before vacation. All my random piles of crap and thumb tacked reminders are sorted and stacked to perfection. Anything that I know is an open issue it right there, in a file, in the middle of my desk, to insure no snoopy coworkers will discover what a lazy slob and procrastinator I am. Truly I am not (much), but I feel any slightly overdue action or evidence that I may not be RIGHT on top of everything is like the cigarrettes stashed under my mattress in high school. No mom, don’t put my clothes away! I’ll do it. Yes, I like laundry, just STAY OUT OF MY ROOM.

Yes, I’m organized, no need to touch anything, anything you need is right there…DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING. And what ever you do, do NOT OPEN MY DESK DRAWER! Nothing to see in there.

Ok, so I can’t quite take that attitude here at work, but I sure can try and head them off. Which I think I have…for the most part. I think. ugh.

Wizards are Hot

Heading down the folks place tomorrow night. We'll leave after work and stop at a Motel six in Jersey for the night. It's the only one we know that allows dogs, and since we’re bringing the Big Brown Monster, no other place we know of will accommodate us. It is in the armpit of New Jersey. It would be nice if we could find an alternative that's next to a nice restaurant or jazz bar. But no, so strip mall central here we come!

It will be nice to be home for a while. My mom is still recovery from her episode a few weeks back. Hopefully she'll be doing better.

On a side note, her inability to see straight has left the cooking duties to the daughters. Um, yeah. My sister’s beau has offered to bake an apple pie, but that is approximately 15% of the entire meal, so needless to say I will be elbow deep in foodstuffs Thursday morning.

It will be nice to watch some football there too. I can rib my dad about USC near loss to Fresno State (yes, he is a Trojan). It seemed like all the planets were lining up to help the Hokies reclaim a rightful spot in the BCS...or do I dare say a National Title chance, but with Penn States win and USC pulling it out, that little fantasy must die. Things still look good for the BCS and the ACC title, with Georgia Tech beating Miami! Boy, I was hoping, but I really didn't think it would happen.

There is also a plan to see the new Harry Potter. I am so excited I can't even tell you! Goblet of Fire was, by far, my favorite book of the series. I can't wait to see the mermaids and how cute Cedric will be. Of course, he couldn't get close to the prettiness of Oliver Wood. Rrrreeeeyaaar (that is supposed to sound like a cat...you know...reeeeeeerrrrrrr?) Who, by the way, I believe was at the Quidditch World Cup in the book, so perhaps he will make an appearance?!

I am sad that I may not get to see any friends while at home. Mrs. T will be away at her hubby’s family. There was hope that we could gather on Sunday, but since the stupid Rockettes settled their strike, she is destined to be a Radio City Music Hall watching a Holiday Spectacular!! (I think...let me know).

Take your tie and shove it!

I am sitting here at 11pm Saturday night and all I have to say is....Woooohoooooooo! Go Hokies!

Yep, we sure did kick their butts. And in their house. Oh yeah.

The highlight was when they were showing the mad dash by the UVA kids for seats at the beginning at there were (of course) dudes in ties and the announcer said

"Hey, that kids wearing a tie! Why would you wear a tie to a football game? People don't wear ties to football games(laughing) I mean, unless you're a sportscaster?"

Yes, we in Virginia know all about the delusional Ivy League wannabes. Thomas Jefferson blah, blah, blah.

AND...Georgia Tech just beat Miami! Wow.

AND...USC is only beating Fresno by 7 and Fresno is getting ready to score.

Holy crap. What a Saturday. If only Michigan State coulda beat Penn State. And Michigan coulda beat Ohio State. Oh well...you can't have everything.

I can probably eat more paper clips than you too...

Well, the Nacho is not pregnant…again. Lord, what do we have to do!? Well, of course I know what we have to do, but so far it’s not working.

After this state of my uterus was confirmed, we went out to dinner and I proceeded to drink too much wine. I hadn’t had any in a while and boy did it pack a punch. As a result, I feel kinda crappy today.

Why does every job I have require me to get up at the butt-crack of dawn? Doesn’t anyone understand that I am not a morning person? Including me. Why don’t I get jobs that start at 9? Whatever happened to 9 to 5? I’m doing 7-4. Hey, there’s another hour in there. Did people use to get paid for lunch?

In other news….

I have averted disaster! Well, not disaster, but annoyance. Saturday was to be UFC night at our house. J invited a gang of dudes over to watch men try and kill each other in a cage. I do not like this sport. I find it repugnant. I understand it takes skill and strength, and the people involved are good at what they do, but it doesn’t change the fact that what they are good at, is hurting people. Hey, I could probably punt a cat farther than you….but we shouldn’t have a contest to find out. Anyway, for some reason the festivities have been moved from our house to another guy’s house. Probably related to the size of his….TV.

Oh, and I am a little excited today because not only did cativa stop by , but sambot actually typed the words N-a-c-h-o I-n-t-o-l-e-r-a-n-t into a blog post. I am all a twitter just thinking of his fingers clicking away on his Mac-Daddy Mac!

I love me some Apple porn.

3 o'clock...the blogging hour

Nacho has been a flurry of activity as of late. In direct proportion to my work ethic. That would be adversely proportional. Who has time for work when there is internet to type and click at!?

I think it is this increase in quantity, and decrease in quality that inspired the Oi post.

Question:

Do co-workers think that it you are more likely to do what they want when they ask

"Can you do me a Flavor?"

This is a disturbing new trend around here. Everyone thinks they are witty. They are not.

You can have some of my Prozac if you want..?

Welcome to the Club.
Happy Birthday Amy!

Oi! Blog Pondering

I am going through an internal debate about my blog. I cannot decide whether this should be a "diary" sort of thing or whether I would like to turn it more into and anecdote, short storish kinda of place. Now I just kinda put up whatever I feel like...which is fine. Sometimes it’s more composed, while other times just quick and dirty. I’ve just been thinking that I would like an outlet for my WRITING writing, if you know what I mean.

Any stories I publish on here would also have dairy-type qualities. I would still write in a memoir form, not pure fiction or anything (or at least I don’t think so). A place with less ellipses! And I’m not talking about a bunch of flowery language or 3 paragraph descriptions of last night’s sunset. More like my entries regarding the Amusement Park and less like yesterday’s boring weather report and observations about the size of my ass. I have toyed with the idea of yet ANOTHER blog...but I already have (3)...and NO! you can’t see them by looking at my profile. They exist completely independent of each other…well, there are one or two cross-over readers that I trust. One is parent friendly, one is a group of friends who all post and then there is Nacho. And yes, when I am short on material or energy I put up the same posts on different blogs. Lazy perhaps, but efficient, you bet!

Maybe it’s just that I am feeling especially creative today. I was thinking about stuff that has happened in my life and decided to sit and write about it. Reading through it, I’m not sure it fits on this site. Also, I am a closet poet (shut up, stop laughing) and would like a place to put it all down. Can you copyright a blog? Not that anyone would want to steal my stuff...

Numbers Schmumbers

What is up with the weather around here? It's 60 degrees outside!

Unfortunately it is not going to last. Apparently, the front will move through this afternoon and bring the cold blustery winter wind with it. Killington is set to open this weekend, and this warm spell must have them a little worried. On their website, they have their "base" listed as 0"...which seems like a problem.

The mountain we usually go to, Mount Snow, has tentatively set their open date for next Wednesday 11/23. I'm sure J hopes this will be the case. When we get back from Thanksgiving in Virginia, hopefully we can start our weekend trips up to Vermont...where the boys snowboard and the girls sit by the fire, drink wine and knit!

And in knitting news...
I have finished the back of my very first sweater! I will start the front panels tonight (it's a cardigan) at my knitting group. Not really a group, since there is only two of us. I'm a little worried because I didn’t use the right gauge yarn or the recommended needle size. I did a lot of figuring with a calculator to determine how to proceed. They should introduce this rogue knitting style to High School math classes. If needle 10 yeilds 4" after 28 rows, then needle 8 will yeild 4" after X number of rows. Combine with factor Y, the yarn gauge and...er...uh...

Or you could just use a tape measure and knit until it gets a long as it's supposed to. And there is also the fail safe method of holding it up to your body. Which is what I did. Lets hope the arm holes line up.

SAD - Seasonal Annoyance Disorder

I've been super bitch lately. Luckily, most of it is unleashed on co-workers, so J is spared. I feel like winter is coming way too fast this year. There is all sorts of crap I need to do before we get snowed in for the next 5 months and it's driving me nuts. Sorry, feeling whiny.

I realized I am paying for a gym membership I haven't used since May. What a waste of money. But to quit...well, it would be quitting. It would mean admitting I am not going to exercise, nor do I plan on exercising anytime in the near future...and that's just sad.

One would think the current state of my stuff would motivate me. But this time of year my motivation goes down the toilet with my good humor and patience. Not only do the winter blues make me crabby and eat everything in sight, they also make the prospect of exercise less appealing.

Not that I exercised before it got cold. Because, you know, then it was way too hot! I have yet to find the correct temperature, relative humidity and sun/cloud ratio that will inspire me to purposely move so that my heart will race and mucsles will be toned. But I’m afraid my winter blubber has begun to build too early. There is still Thanksgiving and Christmas to get through with their gravies and cookies and potatoes. Smash 'em, mash 'em, hash brown 'em, fry 'em, boil 'em, bake 'em. My mom bakes them twice! Yum, Twice-Baked Potatoes. With cheddar cheese. And Gravy.

Oh Lord, I am doomed.

Because I have nothing better to do

I am late on the bandwagon with this, but since my friend Jessamyn is not as blog addicted as I am, she probably hasn’t done this yet. So I’m doing it for her!

According to Google, the Top Ten Things “Jessamyn needs”….

Jessamyn needs to be picked up at the airport and taken to dinner

Jessamyn needs no introduction

Ok, well Jessamyn is not that common of a name, so it appears that all she needs is transport and food, but luckily you already know who she is. Well I hope so if your going to pick her up from the airport.

Furthurmore, “Jessamyn wants”…

Jessamyn wants us to invest in libraries, and use them as tools to bridge the digital divide.

Jessamyn wants to "parlay this love of reading this one book to learning to love reading for its own sake".

Jessamyn wants to enroll.

Jessamyn wants to show you how to knot and showcase your big-holed beads

Jessamyn wants to know what we think about a quote about librarians and privilege.

Well! Apparently Jessamyn wants a lot more than she needs…just like the rest of us.

Oh, and Jess, I can't wait for you to learn me on those big-holed beads!

Rosencrantz, bring it on! Or is it Guildenstern?

Nacho: Good Morning Dirt Digger, can you fax me the Important Form we sent you last week?

Dirt Digger: What form?

Nacho: You didn’t get it?

Dirt Digger: Well, I’m digging dirt, can you send someone out with a copy?

Nacho: You didn’t’ get my message?

Dirt Digger: How many times do I have to tell you guys that I don’t check my messages?

Nacho : (oh, right , what was I thinking?) Where are you digging?

Dirt Digger: Do you know that new development off 100?

Nach: Before or after the bridge?

Dirt Digger: Is someone leaving now?

Nacho: Are you not there yet?

Dirt Digger: Can someone meet me there in 10 minutes?

Nacho: You’re at the office now?

Dirt Digger: If I leave the office in 5 minutes, can someone meet me in 15?

Nacho: Um, can you look on your fax machine?

Dirt Digger: Oh, do you mean this paper that says Important Form?

Monday: Stupid questions that have both annoyed me, and made me realize I might have PMS

One I Serve: Did Plumber order the shower?

Do I look like the plumber? Though you seem to think differently, I do not have insight into the doings of people who do not work here. I can call him…do you want me to call him?

One I Serve: Do we KNOW if the plumber ordered the shower?

Yes, better. This is a question I can answer. No, I do not know if the plumber has ordered the shower. I assume, since you are asking, that you don’t know either. So, WE definitely do not know.

Phone Rings

Nacho: Good Morning, General Contracting Company.

Guy on Phone: Is The Girl Who Also Works There close?

Uh...is she close? Do you mean is she standing next to me while I talk to you on the phone? She is never close. Her desk is on the other side of the office. Is her proximity to me in direct relation to your need to speak to her? Why are you asking this question? Is it so that if I produce her to you, you can be comforted in knowing she was close, not far….Do you have some sort of phone guilt problem? We have intercoms, it’s ok.

Lady I Work With: Good Morning Nacho.

Nacho: Good Morning to you.

Lady I Work With: Why are we so chipper today?!

This particular person has the habit of asking me questions that I do not know how to answer. First, I can only assume by "WE" you mean "ME"... since it appears WE is my new name. And I was not aware that I was chipper. I am not un-chipper. Do I have to have a reason for not being a miserable bitch?

15 seconds later

Lady I Work With: Well, aren’t we purple today?

No, we are not purple. You are wearing white. I suppose I am purple, because me shirt is purple. I really don’t feel comfortable talking about my purpleness.

Goo Be Gone!

I desperately need to do laundry. As such, I am scraping the bottom of the apparel barrel. As I sit, my too-short sweater rides up in the back and my pants zipper creeps down in the front. No matter which way I turn you can glimpse my underwear! Why I keep these pants in my possession I have no idea. I put them on, forgetting their inability to stay zipped, and then when I get out of my car in the morning I feel the tell-tale looseness in front. So today, every time I stand up I have to do a quick yank . Fun.

Yesterday I wore a pair of brown slacks I never wear. As I put them on and buttoned them, I noticed they felt a little tight. “Oh, THAT’S why I never where these” I say to myself, trying my best to believe that they have ALWAYS been that tight, and therefore explaining their low rotation. Oh no, the fact that when I sit the cuffs ride so high you can see my unshaven legs and ugly white tube socks have nothing to do with it! (All cute socks are dirty now too, so the white sporty ones are all I got).

This brings me to a subject I often worry about. I am unaware of my current weight. I used to weigh myself every morning, just to make sure I don’t creep up any higher, but when we started the renovation, the scale got packed away with everything else we own. So I have gone 5 solid months without numerical validation that I am not getting fat. So, I fear that number has creeped up. I don’t think it’s a bunch, but enough for me to feel kinda chubby.

Though I do not have numeric validation of this fact (I am still trying to muster the courage to get the scale out of the basement) yesterday, I had button validation. And I shit you not, this happened JUST like this.

Nacho: Ugh, I feel fat.

Girl I Work With: Oh, I hate it when I feel like that.

Nacho: I’m afraid I’ve gained weight, but I don’t know because my scale is still in storage.

Girl I Work With: Oh, you’d know…you’d feel it in your clothes.

Nacho: Yeah, I guess your right (As I bend down to pick up some bluerprints)

POP!

Nacho: Oh crap.

Girl I work with: What’s wrong?

Nacho: The button just popped off my pants!

Girl I work with: Oh my god, weird!

Nacho: I suppose that’s the sign I was looking for. From your mouth to God’s ears.

Girl I work with: Here, I have a safety pin.

Nacho: Thanks.

So today is the first day of my No More Chinese Food and Pizza Diet. No more Goo either (for those of you who don’t know, Goo is mayo, sour cream, melted cheese, Salad dressing or sort of creamy saucy ranchy type condiment that makes your food moist). Mmmmm… I love goo.

My mom is back at home, which is good. They don't know what is wrong with her, which is bad.

The CATscan and MRI didn't really confirm anything. They are still saying it may have been a "mini" stroke. Frankly, putting that "mini" in front of the word stroke doesn't keep it from scaring the crap out of me. She's still dizzy and is having trouble with her vision. They told her to go to an opthamologist to see if they could figure out what's going on. I spoke with her a little last night and she's in good spirits. She's a little pissy that she can't drive and just all over frustrated about the situation.

Good news is that J and I are going there for Thanksgiving this year, so I get to see her in a couple weeks. My mom and I joked that if she's not feeling better, I may have to cook...yikes! Let's hope not. Not because I don't want to help, but my Mom's Thanksgivings are Yuuuuuummmmmmmyyyyyyy. MMMMMMmmmmmmm. I don't want to be responsible for ruining Thanksgiving. I suppose my Mom could coach me from the sidelines. Oh Lord, that would be a nightmare too. My mom is not the most patient of people.

Hmm, we shall see.

Mommy

I was planning to follow up yesterday’s somewhat self righteous and agitated post with something light and happy and funny. But low and behold, this is not to be.

Yesterday when I got home from work, I saw my Dad had called from his cell phone, but didn’t leave a message. I shrugged, grabbed a soda and sat on the couch to watch Dr. Phil. About an hour and a half later, somewhere near the end of Oprah, the phone rings. It’s my parents home number. I pick up the phone, and to my surprise it’s my Dad’s voice on the other end. You see, my Dad never calls from the ol’ homestead. My mom is always the one to dial and initiate the conversation. Sure, he’ll hop on the phone, say hello and engage in a little chit chat, but he usually let’s my Mom do most of work.

"Hey Dad!,what’s going on?" I say, being jovial, not expecting anything to actually be going on.

"Well, your mother’s in the hospital."

He said this so strangely. Like he couldn’t believe it himself. He said it like he had preceded it with “you’re not going to fucking believe this shit, but “. He sounded astonished.

He quickly included that there is absolutely nothing to worry about and the CAT scan didn’t really show anything (Wha? CAT scan?!) Well, at first they thought that she had a little pre-stroke (huh? Stroke?) , but then Dr. So-and-so came in and said he didn’t think so. So now they are doing a MRI (bah?) and Mom has to stay the night.

Apparently, around 7AM yesterday morning my parents were getting ready to leave to go vote. But as my mom came down the stairs, she complained of dizziness, double visions and some tingling in her fingers. She said she didn’t think she could make it to the car, so my Dad called 911.

So here I am talking to my Dad, nearly 12 hours since this has gone down, concerned but also kinda pissed that this is the first I’m hearing of it. But my concern obviously wins out and drill him with as many questions as I can think of. Unfortunately, he didn’t really know anything…no one seemed to know anything yet.

He gave me the number of her room so I could give her a call.

She sounded…ok. She sounded the same. She wasn’t in any way "off" or slurring or anything, but I did think she sounded scared. She tried to pretend it was no big deal, and the whole time was trying to change the subject. Though I was happy to hear that my Aunt Margie saw the renovation pictures on our renovation blog, it wasn’t really what I was looking to talk about. We talked for a while, but the conversation left me ill at ease. When we said good-bye, I told her I loved her and that seemed to shake her a little.

My family has never been and "I love you" family. Oh, we love each other immensely, but the words are very rarely spoken. I came to terms with that a long time ago and have done my best to overcome the hesitancy to say it in my subsequent relationships. I think my Mother might have taken the verbal-ness of my feelings as some sign of impending doom.

Now I am waiting hear from them. I’ve tried my Dad’s cell, but no one answers. I tried home in the hopes that she’s been discharged, but no answers there either. So I wait, and act all crabby here at work. I also haven’t had a cigarette since Monday and decided the cold turkey is no good and am currently chomping on a piece of Nicorette to ease the edginess – not really working.

I’ll update when I know more.

A post from one of the blogs I regularly read struck a nerve today. It wasn’t so much the actual post, as the comments made about it.

So…some random thoughts. This will not be clear or concise, just emptying my brain so I can get back to work.

As parents, people hope that their children are happy. However, sometimes parents demand that it be the “right” kind of happiness…the "responsible" happiness.

I suppose as parents, the utmost importance is safety. We want our children to be safe first, happy second. Perhaps one is not valuable without the other. But sometimes, our idea of safety can be stifling and oppressive. We want our kids to have steady work and money because we know it will keep a roof over their heads and food in their belly. We want achievement, but when the attainment of success puts them some perceived risk, some parents become unsupportive and judgmental.

Parents believe their children are capable of great achievements, like completing law school or getting into Harvard. Parents encourage hardwork and perseverance in order for their children to realize their “dreams.”

When asked to believe that their children could be a successful artist, or write a best selling novel, some parents become fearful and protective. The possibility that their children may actually want to pursue such an interest scares them, and this fear can turn into anger. It seems that some take it as a personal affront that their child believes in their own talent.

Parents will not always condemn, but they are afraid of encouraging. I suppose talent is harder to criticize than work ethic, especially when you love someone. Failure at Med School can be chalked up to a lack of determination, failure as a writer is a lack of ability? and then they feel remiss if they encouraged it in the first place.

Parents will brag about their kids talents , but when asked to have faith in that talent, a childs dream is quickly shoved into the convenient little box of “hobby.”

I understand the motive, but I hope to be a parent that will support my childs dreams, not expecting some personal pay off or put my worries before their passions.

I rather my child struggle and fail while believing in themselves, than live with regret.

I suppose now I am destined to have a kid who wants to be the next Fred Durst.

If you wait until everything's perfect...blah, blah, blah

I should be ovulating in the next few days. I have my arsenal of pee sticks at the ready. I checked last night, and no dice – which means I won't be ovulating in the next 24 hours.

Thinking about the success or non-success of this month’s attempt, some timing issues have risen.

#1 THE WEDDING

J's best buddy M is getting married next August. At least that's what we've been told. No invitations out yet or anything, but we have it on good authority that next August will be it.

If we are successful this month, that will put us with a little one in August. And I mean LITTLE*. Not sure, but I don't think it's advisable to fly across country with a 2-week-old. Also, I'm sure the lack of sleep and the high probability that I will be totally freaking out will make it not so appealing. So if we get it done, I doubt I will be attending. J would have to go because he's a groomsman, and M is his spiritual equivalent of a twin brother. I'm a little disappointed because this wedding will be a blast. I am sure the moment J leaves I will explode into jealous fits and sobbing and oh so much pissyness.

However, it may not happen this month. But let's hope it happens within the next 3. If so, that would put me in my 3rd trimester at wedding time. Not only will I be HUGE** and uncomfortable, it is my understanding that you are not supposed to fly during this time. Something with the air pressure and the babies popping out unexpectedly…(?)

J and I talked about it and decided it will not deter our efforts. M does not know about the secret plan to keep me from his nuptials, but I'm sure he will agree it's worth it.

#2 UNBEARABLE ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS

Now, if I am to be due anywhere near the month of August, that means I will be at my most bloated, most uncomfortable during the most oppressive and humid time of year. I don’t think I need to say anymore…Ugh.

*is that the visual equivalent of an oxymoron?
**then i suppose this is redundant?

Amusement Park Emotions Part 2: Proletariat Solidarity

So the line for Superman is 3 hours long. We didn’t know that going in, but after an hour it was clear it was going to be a while. I glance around and I see a cross section of American cutlure and class. There are families, couples and teenagers representing the full economic, ethnic, and rudeness spectrum.

Whatever labels may be attached to us, based on our skin color, fashion sense or hygiene, are swept aside. We are all on equal standing, having paid our $37.50 to stand in this line. This extremely long line. We exchange knowing looks and commiserate in our shared boredom. We eavesdrop on each other, check out the attractive people, stare too long at the funny looking people and keep a vigilant eye out for the enemy – the cutter . Line cutting is not permitted and, quite frankly, would get your ass kicked.

That is, unless you dish out an additional $20 for the Qbot! What is a Qbot? It’s a small pager looking device that you scan at a gate and lets you cut in line. Actually I think it pages you when it’s time for you to ride, so you don’t have to stand in line. Or maybe it warps the time/space continuum so that what is 3 hours to me is 7 seconds to you. Regardless, we see these people walk right up to the front of the line and the 16-year-old manning the chain pulls it aside, and lets them ride. Often they glance smuggly at the throngs of people, standing like cattle in our steel piped maze.

Yep, The Six Flags people put the Qbot line in clear veiw of the normal line – which I like to call the "Line of the People". You could feel the tension every time some Qbot wielding person marched up those stairs and hopped right on the coaster. There was unrest amongst the masses. We were paying customers, but that Qbot line was the preverbal lunch counter. While we stand in our corner, waiting for a spot to sit, they saunter right up and finish their meal before we even have a menu in our hands. This is America dammit! Equal opportunity! There was revolution in the air.

But then the line moves 10 feet and we are distracted and scurry forward. Quickly we forget our fantasies of overthrowing the beurgois and their little Qbots of privilege.

In the end, I suppose the opportunity is equal. In America we all have equal opportunity to shell out extra dough for little electronic gizmos that raise our social status. I just don't think it's worth it. But other times, I envy those who do.
